I currently work at the Pentagon Channel where my most recent project has been establishing a completely new look including a news crawl, clock, animated logo bug, animated lower 3rds, and animated “live” tabs. I’m also importing as many elements into various automation systems as possible including Avid DEKOcast, fxDEKO, iNews, and Control Air. I do get a bit of a break though because we don’t have a weather station. This time around, I don’t have to deal with a lot of icons and frame sequences as I have at past stations when I revise a particular graphics look.
Included in my new designs is the framework for a new website which has a look consistent with the new on-air graphics. I’m establishing a plan of attack from the ground up and recommending development ideas to News, Master Control. and Engineering. I’ve gone for advanced DEKO and Thunder training, utilize XML and RSS, and have created a style guide with tips and tricks for using the new system and maintaining a consistent look. Our graphics request system has been given a facelift as well and the procedures changed to smooth out a few daily news production hang-ups. Graphics were always getting done on time, but now they can be completed in a timely manner leaving greater opportunity for development of promotional spots.
At the same time, I’m upgrading our graphics department to meet the new demands. Our Macs will soon be networked with a shared Xsan including severals RAIDs and enough processing power to create a network render farm for a couple of our major applications. Also, I’ve indexed all our current software and made recommendations for software and hardware upgrades that will make sure we can support the additional graphics capabilities of News and Master Control. Through all of these advances, I can see room for further improvement as our department grows and the technology develops.
Its great working for a company that CAN and WILL fund major re-development that will lead to a brighter future. I love being a part of start-up ideas.
Last year I had only two projects completed in 2005 qualifying them for Emmy award submissions through the Pentagon Channel. I was nominated for an Emmy for my compilation in the Animation category and won Gold in BDA for “Happy Holidays”
My entire family showed up in support as did a couple longtime friends. We took over nearly an entire table at the awards ceremony. Surprisingly, many of my personal photos showed up on the official Capitol Emmys website. You can view the 2005 photos here and check out my awesome blue dress!
This year, though I wasn't nominated, I'd like to congratulate Dave Annarino of the Pentagon Channel and Samantha Yoo of American Forces Radio and Television Services for their nominations. Have fun and good luck!
